Allen, Kaine Tied in VA Senate Poll

Former Virgnia Governor and Senator George Allen has decided to run for his old seat. Allen famously lost his Senate seat in 2006 during the Democratic wave year to former Secretary of the Navy Jim Webb. Webb was mainly a single-issue, anti-Iraq War voice, and decided not to run again next year.

Along with this decision came scrambling in both parties to assess the new situation. In Webb's place, the Democrats decided to run former Governor Tim Kaine. Kaine was also the chair of the DNC. Allen has also tossed his hat into the ring-- although he may also have to fight off Tea Party challengers.

Now a new poll shows the two head-to-head in the race. The poll comes to us from the Washington Post, which does extensive coverage of Virginia politics.

Allen (R): 46%
Kaine (D): 46%
Other/und: 8

Notice that neither cracks 50%. The Democrats won big in the state in both 2006 and 2008 but lost their momentum in 2009 when more serious voters came to the polls. Governor Bob McDonnell was elected with nearly 60% of the vote.

So we'll have to wait and see what happens next. With the race this close, it's way too early to make predictions.
